Set up on a SmartThings compatible hub
Sometimes it is necessary to change the way that a Z-Wave device works on your hub to get the best out of it. Many Z-wave devices have configuration parameters that can be tweaked to change the behaviour of the device. Note that the process changed around 2022 with the move from the Groovy based system to the new Edge drivers and not all of these new edge drivers support all of the device configurations available. Below are the instructions to change the parameters of a Aeotec Z-Wave Home Energy Monitor so that it can poll more frequently.
1. Install the advanced Aeotec Home Energy Meter Gen5 driver which gives access to the advanced configuration parameters.
2. Set the Aeotec device to use the new driver in SmartThings
- In the SmartThings app under Devices click on the Aeotec Home Energy Monitor device
- Click the 3 dots menu and select Driver
- Use the Select different driver button to select the new Aeotec Home Energy Meter Gen5 driver
3. Configure the HEM parameters
- In the SmartThings app under Devices click on the Aeotec Home Energy Monitor device again
- Click the 3 dots menu and select Settings
- if not already done, set Parameter 252 to 0 or disable the configuration lock on the other parameters and save parameters are unlocked)
- set parameter 101 to 258 (Report 1 is watts for clamp 1)
- set parameter 102 to 67589 (Report 2 is KWh and Voltage for clamp 1)
- set parameter 111 to 10 (Report 1 interval is 10 seconds)
- set Parameter 112 to 60 (Report 2 interval is 60 seconds)
- If you have have 3 clamp version
- set parameter 101 to 2 (total watts) + 256 (watts clamp 1) + 512 (watts clamp 2) + 1024 (watts clamp 3) = 1794
- set parameter 102 to 2048 (KWh clamp 1) + 4096 (KWh clamp 2) + 8192 (KWh clamp 3) + 65536 (volts clamp 1) + 131072 (volts clamp 2) + 262144 (volts clamp 3) = 473088
Once you have set up the parameters, you should see the frequency of the updates in the SmartThings app increase. Unfortunately this does not currently translate into additional events being recorded in the SmartThings API and therefore it will not impact the frequency with which ConstantGraph will record the data. This has been raised with Aeotec support.
To get even greater control of the parameters for any device, there is another device driver that can be used.
1. Install the Z-Wave Device Config Mc driver which gives access to all device configuration parameters
2. Configure the parameters of the required device
- In the SmartThings app under Devices click on the required device
- Click the 3 dots menu and select Driver
- Make a note of the name of the current driver so you can restore it later
- Use the Select different driver button to select the new Z-Wave Device Config Mc driver
3. Configure the parameters
- In the SmartThings app under Devices click on the required device
- Click the 3 dots menu and select Settings
- select the appropriate setting to configure your device as required
4. Restore the original driver
- In the SmartThings app under Devices click on the required device
- Click the 3 dots menu and select Driver
- Use the Select different driver button to select the original driver record in step 2 above
